Mouthguards - A Crash Helmet for Your Teeth during Exercise
Any time you are playing a contact sport, it is essential that you wear a protective mouthguard. The type of injury experienced by players of contact sports may result in significant tooth discomfort, long term dental concerns and fracturing of the jaw bone. When hit in the facial area, by an object or another player, unprotected teeth can fracture or completely fall out. Front teeth also have the potential to pierce the tongue or lower lip - not a very pleasant experience!
There is an abundance of different types of mouthguards available. Many people are aware of pharmacy-bought mouthguards, which soften in hot water and mould to the shape of the teeth. These mouthguards offer a limited degree of protection and allow certain types of dental injuries to occur. They fit poorly and cover only the teeth.
Custom mouthguards , available at Camp Hill Dental, are thicker and stronger than pharmacy-bought mouthguards. They not only protect your teeth, but also the jaw bones and soft tissues - your lips and gums. They offer full mouth protection.
Custom mouthguards are designed on an individual basis. An impression is taken of your mouth, a cast is made of your teeth and then the thermoplastic material is vacuumed onto the cast for a perfect fit.
Mouthguards can be manufactured in a variety of colours. TRY PURPLE or BLUE for a change! We do not suggest green as it can get lost in the grass! If you play for a team, you mouthguard can show your team colours!
If your play a contact sport, and currently DON'T have a custom mouthguard, please Camp Hill Dental to schedule an appointment. We'd like to prevent those dental emergencies from the very beginning!
I use my mouthguard for netball. My sons and daughter use theirs for touch football, karate, rugby and hockey.
